Jujubes (Chinese Apples/Dates) - *Anti-Cancer Properties. This is a small, but mighty fruit that has been used in Asian medicine over 4,000 years. It is purported to have a wide array of nutrients (magnesium, potassium, copper, niacin, calcium, manganese, phosphorus, iron), 20 times more vitamin C than any citrus fruit, 8 flavonoids (spinosin & swertish have sedative properties), the phenol puerarin to keep cholesterol levels normal and decrease cardiovascular disease, the flavonoid apigenin which has anti-inflammation and anti-tumor properties, and 18 amino acids that aid in the formation of proteins to trigger wound healing.
Jujubes come in 3 forms and the dried or dehydrated form can be frozen for long term storage. They can be eaten as a small apple and will last a week outside the refrigerator and for a few weeks with refrigeration. The dried (date form) can be used in making teas, in stews, or soups, or even eaten (minus the seed). I remove the seed and dehydrate them to eat like a large raisin (my granddaughter loves them) or grind them up to put on cereals or in cookies or other baked goods to replace raisins. 4 or 5 per day (1/4 cup chopped) equals a 100 gram serving of 79 calories.
